Floridian Natural Gas Storage
Floridian Natural Gas Storage wants to build two above-ground gas storage tanks on the 155-acre Ameristeel Superfund site at 18300 SW Warfield Blvd in Indiantown, Florida. The tanks will have a total capacity of 8 million Dekatherms, or 104 million gallons, to store natural gas delivered to and from Gulfstream's and Florida Gas Transmission's pipelines. The project is contracted to be built by Chicago Bridge & Iron Company. Gas storage has a history of dangerous accidents, and locating this facility in Indiantown, a largely mayan and latino community, is another example of environmental racism. The project only adds to increasing fossil fuel infrastructure in the area instead of encouraging sustainable energy solutions. The $225 million project came up for final site plan approval in front of the Martin County Commission May 6, 2008. FGS is still awaiting certification from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission under docket number CP08-13. You can view related documents at FERC docket search, entering CP08-13 as the docket number.
